Hans Stanley was born in 1933 in Vienna, Austria. He began studying economics and political science at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1957. He then worked as an economist for the United Nations and the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration in Vienna. In 1960 he moved to the United States, where he was employed by the National Science Foundation until 1971
In 1975 he became a professor of economics at the State University of New York at Albany. He is currently Professor Emeritus in Economics at SUNY-Albany.
